Step-by-Step Guide: How to Install Tear-Offs on Your Motocross Goggles

Riding motocross demands clear vision, and that’s where tear-offs come in. Tear-offs are thin, removable layers that attach to your MX goggles, protecting your lenses from mud, dirt, and debris while giving you the ability to peel off a layer for a clear view mid-ride. Learning how to properly install tear-offs is crucial to ensure they work effectively during your race or ride.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to put tear-offs on your MX goggles the right way:

1. Start with Clean Goggles

Before installing tear-offs, make sure your goggles are completely clean. Any dirt or smudges on the lens will transfer through the tear-offs, making it difficult to see clearly. Use a microfiber cloth to gently clean the lens and ensure there are no scratches or leftover dirt.

2. Align the Tear-Offs

Take one tear-off and align it with the tear-off posts on the sides of your goggle lens. The posts are typically found on the top corners of your goggles and are designed to hold the tear-offs in place. Make sure the tear-off is facing the right way—there should be a tab or pull loop on the left or right side, depending on your dominant hand, for easy access while riding.

3. Attach the Tear-Off to the Posts

With the tear-off properly aligned, snap it onto the tear-off posts on the goggles. The fit should be snug but not overly tight. Make sure the tear-off lies flat against the lens to avoid any air gaps that could trap dirt between layers.

4. Add Multiple Layers

Most riders use multiple tear-offs for longer races or rides, allowing them to quickly peel away several layers as the goggles get dirty. If you’re stacking tear-offs, repeat the process for each layer. Be mindful to align each layer carefully to avoid wrinkles or misalignment that could obstruct your vision.

5. Test the Tabs

Once the tear-offs are attached, gently tug on the pull tab to ensure each layer comes off smoothly. The last thing you want during a race is to struggle with removing a tear-off. The tabs should be easy to pull but secure enough that they don’t come off accidentally during your ride.

6. Check for Visibility

After installing the tear-offs, put the goggles on and check your visibility. Make sure there’s no distortion or warping from the layers. If everything looks good, you’re ready to hit the track with a clean and clear view, protected from dirt and debris.
